Beginning Photography: The Basics and Beyond

Saturdays, November 22 and December 6 (two-part workshop)

9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

$80 members / $90 non-members

Professional photographer, Nancy Ori will discuss basic use of available light, camera controls, composition, and camera accessories for digital and film cameras. Learn tips on how to simplify the technical information. Other topics include: action photography, portraits, close ups and landscapes. This workshop is designed for the beginning level photographer.  Bring a camera and its instruction booklet, notebook and photo project ideas to the first session. Light morning refreshments will be served.

 

Colonial and Victorian Christmas Customs

Wednesday, December 10

Decorations of holly and mistletoe, gingerbread and caroling, these are just a few of the Christmas customs that have been handed down form earlier times. Join Judith Krall-Russo, a Food Historian, to learn about the similarities and differences between a Colonial Christmas and a Victorian celebration. Discover what foods were prepared and enjoyed during the holiday festivities.

 

Music, Mystery and Motion: Getting to Know the Guinness Collection

Tour the Murtogh D. Guinness collection of mechanical musical instruments and automata. Engage in discussion with museum collections staff while exploring how automatic instruments work, what they meant in their time and how they were made. Participants will enjoy the music during a live demonstration of several objects from the collection.

Painted Paper Collage Workshop

Saturday, January 24

10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

$65 members / $75 non-members

Join collage artist, Nancy Egol Nikkal to learn about and create collage in new and exciting ways. Inspired by the great collage artist Romare Bearden, participants will work with mixed media – watercolor, acrylic paint, pen, crayon and pencil, plus incorporate graphic imagery – and be able to create a luscious landscape or abstraction. Work with everyday tools and media and expand your personal visual vocabulary. Participants must bring their own supplies; a materials list will be provided upon registration. Conversations will include composition, color, texture and design. The workshop will include demonstrations, individual attention and group discussions. All skill levels are welcome. Light morning refreshments will be served; please bring a bagged lunch.

Nutrition, Diet and You!

The human body isamazing; however, good nutritional choices lead to a longer and healthier life. Join Sue Anthony, a registered dietitian to learn about the human body and its needs. Discover the tools you need to overcome barriers and begin to make changes in food habits, reduce the high incidence of diet-related disease and set obtainable goals. Learn tomake good health choices that can be sustained through life. This lecture is offered in conjunction with the exhibition, Head to Toe: All About Your Body, on view from January 27 – April 12, 2009.

Abraham Lincoln and his Role during the Civil War

Join Paul Ellis-Graham, a Lincoln historian and educator for an engaging lecture that will survey the important highlights of the Lincoln Administration between 1861-1865. Discussion will include a variety of critical issues raised during the Civil War, as well as how Lincoln was forced to deal with them. Topics will include: Fort Sumter, prosecution of the war effort, foreign policy, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, Reconstruction, the Inaugural Address and the Lincoln assassination.

Realism to Abstraction: Painting with Serena Bocchino

Join New Jersey artist Serena Bocchino in this creative painting workshop. Participants will engage in still life drawing exercises that will lead into the abstract transfer onto canvas. During the workshop, individuals will paint while being guided by Bocchino. All skill levels are welcome. Participants must bring their own supplies; a materials list will be provided upon registration. Light morning refreshments will be served; please bring a bagged lunch.

Rembrandt’s Etchings: The World in Black and White

Join Franklin Robinson, the director of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, for a lecture about Rembrandt Van Rijn. Surrounded by the exhibition, Sordid and Sacred: The Beggars in Rembrandt’s Etchings on view from January 27 – March 29, 2009, Robinson will discuss Rembrandt’s life and extraordinary work, with a focus on his etchings. 

The Photographer's Eye: Intermediate Photography

Saturdays, March 21 and April 4 (2-part workshop)

9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

$80 members / $90 non-members

Expanding on the understanding of beginning camera techniques, participants will join professional photographer, Nancy Ori, in further exploring the art of photography.

Discussions and critiques will include creating strong compositions, understanding and using lighting and color for drama and mood, choosing printing materials, techniques to enhance your image and how to develop and think aboutyour personal style. One exercise will be completed between the first and second session to produce a series of images that are truly ones own while working towards a personal aesthetic. Students may work in film or digital while developing a better sense of how to formulate and strengthen a visual idea, and then translating that idea into the physical form of a photograph. Participants should have basic camera knowledge. Light morning refreshments will be served; please bring a bagged lunch.
